This is the first album I released which was back in 1993. I had a band named Ivan Purple for many years and we played in Vancouver's underground and nightclub circuits. We started out as 4 members and eventually ended as a trio. This trio was

Myself on vocals, guitar, bass, and keys
Nela H on keyboards and vocals

Ron Clempson on guitar, bass, and vocals

My sister, Nela, was and still is a virtuoso at performing on a piano or keyboards. Starting in early childhood, Nela had a very strict and comprehensive teachings in classical piano. Her talented skills were a true joy to have by my side.  She currently owns and operates a unique dance studio known in BC as XBa. Very original with rave reviews. A kiss to you my seester!

Ron Clempson was with us for many, many years. He migrated with us into BLACK STONE. His guitar playing was amazing! Anyone watching Ron play live was truly amazed at his ability to 'jam' and improvise. Whether tripping on stage or falling off of something, Ron's hands never left his guitar and he kept right on playing not missing a note! A true artist and performer.

KOLO is an interesting album and as I see it,  a compilation of my our early works. All recorded in my 1 bedroom apartment in Kitsilano! Looking back now, I would do it all over again! But hopefully with ProTools this time!

I love the song Battaglia! That one has always been one of my favourites. I've always been a fan of techno and trance music and love a driving beat. It's my 'Ode To Techno'!

I used to frequent the Luv A Fair and Graceland in Vancouver during their heydays! A lot of dancing, pounding music, alternative clothing, black leather, post punk new wave merging. I loved the Luv A Fair for the fact that if you were wearing a black leather jacket, it was part of the outfit. All other coats had to be left at coatcheck.

Battaglia to me captures a lot of the essence's of what I lived and witnessed. The punk days were great for me. One great memory, a lot of fun, tales of glorious moments of urban rebellion!

Sensasia was the 'big' video made from this album. The cool part was the people that eventually got involved in the project. From the award winning director John Pozer to the producer Dean English, the team that came together gave this video it's unique look.

The Video

...on Much Music

Shot from the video SensasiaThe song Kolo touches part of my Yugoslavian heritage hence the title: Kolo! Kolo is a type of traditional Yugoslav dance. You'll hear the classic 'Middle Eastern' flairs done to some pumpin' techno/thrash beat! Nela & Ron did a fabulous job of playing on this recording.

We shot the video for Twice the Speed of Time in one afternoon at Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver. We ended up doing what's called: Commando Style shooting. We had called city hall in West Vancouver to find out what rules and permits we require to do this. Well, all that mattered was the fact that they wanted $5000 for a day permit and other requirements. We did not have that kind of money! Our entire budget was around $500.

So we just showed up one day, with all our clothes and instruments, one ghetto blaster, and a 16mm Bolex camera. Our good friends were with us to help us shoot the video. A little makeup, a camera assistant, and off we were making a 'pro' video.

Twice The Speed Of Time

IVAN PURPLE started in the mid 80's. As aforementioned, there originally were 4 members. Check out the page for the earlier  works now compiled on a CD and digitally re-mastered. There's some really different and original sounding material on that CD. You can hear where the sound I've got today started and morphed. My love for drums started early, just the instruments I needed were not yet created.
